New Real-time Water Quality Data for Chicago River

Real-time water quality monitoring of the Chicago River is now available through an online platform called H2NOW Chicago led by our partners at Current. Friends of the Chicago River is proud to a part of this first-of-its-kind project in the U.S.

"Friends of the Chicago River is thrilled to see H2Now go live, said Margaret Frisbie, Friends' executive director. "It has been 10 years since the swimming standard was approved by USEPA and while we have seen a dramatic improvement in ambient water quality since, swimming is not supported and regulatory agencies have been silent on the matter. Over time H2Now data should be able to tell us when it is safe to swim and mount pressure for more to be done to assure we all have access to a clean, healthy river system."
