The African American Heritage Water Trail memorializes the remarkable stories of African Americans who utilized and settled along the Calumet River: freedom seekers who traveled the Underground Railroad, trailblazers who defied discrimination, learned to fly and became Tuskegee Airmen, and pioneers in the struggle for civil rights and environmental justice. Together we will reflect on these people of courage and fortitude who shaped our nation. To accommodate as many people as possible, we are booking spots for paddle spots and spots to sit in the middle of the canoe. Participants will take turns paddling as needed for everyone who wants to paddle to get a turn. This is a FREE paddle, geared toward local residents. Friends is grateful for the support of the Forest Preserves of Cook County who are sponsoring this trip, providing the community an opportunity to paddle in their neighborhood.

There will be two sessions!

First session: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Second session: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Friends’ trusty canoe guides will help everyone safely load in and out of the canoes, answer questions about the river along the way and act as safety monitors on the water. We provide all equipment, paddling instruction, and safety talk. Trips start and end from the same location, rain or shine! Space is limited, registration required.
