From Sanitary to Prairie: What Comes Next?
Last summer Illinois Prairie Canal was chosen to replace the name of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, which no longer accurately represents this vibrant waterway that has served the region for 126 years. The canal is a reach of the burgeoning 156 mile Chicago-Calumet River system. It is teaming with life and opportunity, and a key part of the region economically and environmentally with bold past and a bright future.
Although the canal is not officially renamed yet, the work to redefine it is well underway following a year long discovery process including including research, interviews, workshops, tours, mapping and data collection coming to an end.
We invite you to join the canal project Steering Committee for lunch and a discussion as we explore what we have learned about the canal and solicit your input on its future.
