One of the most important ways you can help the Chicago-Calumet River system is caring for our public parks and forest preserves. These public lands need our help to improve plant and animal biodiversity, increase public access, and build community and environmental resiliency to the impacts of climate change. Healthy lands absorb more stormwater, which reduces localized flooding and river-edge erosion and improves water quality.
Depending on the season and the site needs, volunteers pull or cut invasive plants, collect/spread seed, build trails, plant/mulch trees or help with other activities. Each location will have a workday leader who will provide instructions, equipment and safety monitoring. All you need to bring is a good attitude, a waterbottle and be dressed to get dirty.
Workdays are happening all year round!
- The Chicago Park District volunteer page is a great resource to find volunteer opportunities in our city parks.
- We are fortunate in Cook County to have over 70,000 acres of forest preserves, the largest forest preserve district in the country! Find a location near you with the Forest Preserves of Cook County's Map and then search for that location in their list of Volunteer Opportunities.
- The Forest Preserves of Lake County also have an event calendar where you can find volunteer opportunities.
Volunteering is a great way to create community with like-minded neighbors, gain the health and wellness benefits of time in nature, and make an immediate impact on your local environment. Get out there and have fun!
