River Reminiscent: 2013

In 2013, Friends and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources began a two-year partnership to increase channel catfish reproduction by designing and installing 400 nesting cavities throughout the North Shore Channel, North Branch, and Little Calumet River. This groundbreaking effort remains the most extensive instream habitat restoration projects within the river system and included the release of 277,000 channel catfish and 8,000 northern pike to boost the species’ reproductive success. The several hundred pound nesting cavities were cast from permeable concrete from Ozinga. Visit our website to watch an informative video about this special wildlife initiative.
