Help Shape Chicago’s Green Infrastructure Strategy

The City of Chicago is releasing a new Green Infrastructure Strategy and wants to hear from you. Green infrastructure harnesses the power of nature to manage flooding by holding and filtering rain where it falls. Solutions like rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavements are proven tools to address Chicago’s flooding challenges, but they must be scaled up and equitably implemented across our communities.

Friends of the Chicago River has long worked to advance these solutions across the watershed. Through our leadership of the Greater Chicago Watershed Alliance and our advocacy in processes like the 2024 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit, we helped secure commitments from the City to expand green stormwater infrastructure and establish measurable goals for reducing combined sewer overflows. This new strategy is a direct opportunity to build on that progress and ensure strong, accountable implementation.
