The 30th anniversary of the Friends of the Chicago River’s Chicago-Calumet River Schools Network (CRSN) was featured this week in a story by Block Club Chicago. As one 17-year-old student told Block Club Chicago: “I really like the fact that we get to interact with the actual stuff we’re learning about in class,” [Jorge] Canales Paz said as he pulled off his sopping waders. “When you actually get to do it, the experiments and all of this in real life, it’s much more engaging and fun.”

Since 1996, the CRSN has connected more than 650,000 students and 2,000 teachers with the river system through hands-on learning, science experiments, and field trips to the river. By bringing lessons beyond the classroom, CRSN helps teachers and students explore water quality, wildlife, pollution, and environmental challenges in their own communities while building a deeper connection to the river system and the natural world.
