Dam removal is one of the most important investments in aquatic life heath and is a priority for Friends of the Chicago River.

A highlight of the Member & Volunteer Celebration is the presentation of annual River Commitment Awards for exceptional efforts on behalf of Friends’ mission and vision.

Chilly temperatures create good conditions for ecological restoration work that requires large equipment because the frozen ground protects the soil and plants from being destroyed and compacted. 

Designed with a one-a-month approach, Friends created a dozen advocacy steps are an invitation to engage and educate the public to get to know the river system as well as what they can do for it and why it matters for us all.

Characterizing the planning process that “will spark improvements,” Friends’ Planning Director Adam Flickinger told the Sun Times “It’s really thinking now what that future looks like.”
